Huawei Technologies, a major Chinese telecom equipment maker, boosted global shipments of smartphones 44% in 2015, moving up to third place in global shipments rankings after Samsung Electronics and Apple, according to data released by IDC, a U.S. research company.
Huawei, which registered strong sales outside China, dislodged Lenovo Group from the No. 3 slot. Lenovo, which fell to fourth place, saw its market share decline 2 percentage points as sales at Motorola Mobility, the U.S. company it purchased, were poor.
Xiaomi, which previously turned in a stellar performance, ranked fifth, unchanged from a year earlier with its market share inching up 0.5 percentage point as sales began to stall. The company is taking more time than it expected in boosting sales outside China and is trying to bolster sales of medium-priced smartphones in China. The company earlier promoted sales of more inexpensive handsets.
Total global shipments of smartphones rose 10% to 1.432 billion units in 2015. The rate of increase contracted sharply from the 28% increase in 2014, indicating the smartphone market has grown mature.
