Honor, a Huawei subsidiary that aims to steal some of Xiaomi thunder through low prices and online marketing, is officially launching in the US. At a CES event marked by confident proclamations about millennials and excessive hoverboard stunts, the company revealed that its 5X smartphone will be available later this month for $199.99.
"Inspired by the shape and design of the famous Guggenheim Museum Bilbao," the Huawei Honor 5X has an aluminum alloy body that has been polished by diamonds with ceramic coating brushed on using a special technique. That's a premium manufacturing process on a surprisingly affordable phone.
At this price, it isn't stinting on specs, either. The 5X has the Qualcomm 615 processor that's common on phones that cost $100 more, along with a 5.5-inch, 1080p screen, 16GB of storage, dual SIM card slots, a MicroSD card slot, 13MP and 5MP cameras, a fast fingerprint sensor, and full support for the AT&T and T-Mobile networks. The 3000Ah battery should last at least a day.
And you will be getting your money's worth for it. Huawei will be selling the Honor 5X starting January 31 for only $199.99. It will be available in gold, silver, and grey colors and can be bought, most likely unlocked, from Amazon, Newegg, and Honor's own US website.
Huawei is throwing some real energy behind its handset in a CES that's otherwise low-key on phones. Also check out the other phones Huawei has announced here at the show, like the Huawei Mate 8 and gold Google Nexus 6P, Huawei P9 and Huawei Mate 9 also will be published here. Let's hope that this is the only customer hoodwinking Huawei plays at this show, or any other.
