Huawei plans to launch a flagship phone in the US

We already know that Huawei is announcing the much-anticipated Huaiwe P9 in London today, but what about the US? The P9 is likely not destined for North America yet again, but the Wall Street Journal says Huawei is going to get serious about the American market soon.

Yu didn't specifically mention which flagship that would be, but chances are it will be the Huawei P9, scheduled to debut tomorrow. Huawei is poising the P9 as its most ambitious and most daring contender to date, one that it plans to use to challenge Apple and Samsung. The jury is still out on the actual specs of the device, which doesn't seem that notable based on a recent leak. However, it's main promoted feature, which Huawei itself more or less confirmed in a press event in London, will be the P9's dual camera lens.

For the last few years, Huawei has been growing internationally. However, the only hint we've had of that in the US were budget phones like the Huawei P8. The Nexus 6P was the first flagship Huawei handset sold in the US, but it didn't carry Huawei's branding. The WSJ report says that Huawei will launch a flagship smartphone later this year in the US. This comes from Huawei's consumer electronics head Richard Yu. As for what that phone will be, no one is saying.

On the R&D front, Huawei spent $9.2 billion last year. Today's P9 will showcase a year-long partnership with Leica to create a camera that has "better color and sharper contrasts even in lowlight conditions." Other specs are rumored to be a 1080p 5.2-inch display, Kirin 950 processor, 32GB of storage, and 3GB of RAM. Design-wise, it will share many similarities with the Nexus 6P including a metal body, similar camera visor, and rear fingerprint sensor.
